You don't have to download Linux. You don't have to get a beta
version of any distro; not even Windows.

This must be a new definition of "support base" of which I was
previously unaware.
If commiseration can be considered support, then I suppose it's
valid.

Very, very wrong. Every new release of Windows/Office has an
equivalent learning curve.
I see it every day at several customer sites. e.g. Win98 users won't
use a Win2k machine because it's too different to their accustomed
environment.
