All freeware:

1 -- Compusec
http://www.ce-infosys.com.sg/CeiNews_FreeCompuSec.asp
However, this is not open source, so there is no peer
review.
Encrypts your boot partition and any others (aes128)

2 -- Crosscrypt
http://www.scherrer.cc/crypt/
Open source, GNU/GPL.
Encryption with aes256 , aes192, aes128, twofish.
This will not encrypt your boot partition.

You can encrypt your partitions with Compusec and build
inside them Crosscrypt drives (expect some performance drop,
use a a lot of RAM and a fast CPU).

3 -- Ram Drives
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q257/4/05.ASP&NoWebContent=1&NoWebContent=1
http://www.google.com/search?as_q=ramdrive%20freeware%20"windows%20xp"&hl=en&as_qt=w&as_eqt=w&as_eq=&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&lr=&num=100&btnG=Google+Search
Move history/cookies/temp to a ram drive.

4 -- Enable swap file cleaning when you shutdown Windows .

or better yet

4 -- Disable swap file (be ready to have lots of RAM or
there will be significant performance drops and BSODs)

5 -- Read, read, read. Read again.
