In addition, erasing a disk takes time. All they need do is to pull the
power plug to stop the disk from erasing itself.
Encryption is probably the way to go, with a daemon running to decrypt
the system (making sure that the daemon was not swapped out ). They if
they grab it, they would have to break the encryption.
The other problem with your scheme is that they could argue in court
that the program was a "destruction of evidence" system, and destruction
of evidence is illegal once you know that the evidence is needed.
(obstruction of justice), while your memory of the password may be
argued to be protected under the 5th ammendment (assuming you are in the
USA).

That is of course pretty dangerous, as accidental loss of power is not
unknown, even with UPS attached.
