The network attached storage(NAS) is actually a PC running FreeBSD that has been optimized as a file server. This device is in place on the network and at a total cost of $200, it is even cheaper than a regular PC running a FreeBSD/Linux solution. The problem is that I'm limited in how I configure it. I don't have the option of installing SAMBA or upgrading the FreeBSD OS. I can only access it through the web interface. I can not connect a keyboard and monitor to it. The web interface is supposed to allow me to set file permission and manage users, but it doesn't seem to work correctly with Windows 2K and XP clients. This is why I'm looking for an external solution.
