Important Files Security, etc.

Hi,

    I recently had a horrible experience with some very important files. I
never want to go through that again, so I am looking for software that will
check my files so I know that they are not damaged. Also, I would like to
make them secure so that no one can view them. And last, but not least, I
would like to be able to get rid of files I no longer need, but I don't want
anyone to be able to recover them. Any suggestions?
