First off ZoneAlarm will not stop detection of an open FTP port.
so the best he can do here, is to use a non-standard FTP port to
keep it at least a little out of harm's way.

The best thing he can do for security is
1) use a good FTP program.
    one in which he can set the permissions of users
    and determine which drives and folders the can access
    so he must carefully read the documentation of the program
2) understand that in all probability his biggest risk is not from
    some outside hacker,
    but from something stupid one of his friends might do,
    thus the above configuration is very important.
    ie: it makes no sense to allow users to make changes to your
    system files
3) use strong passwords (include numbers and upper case)

there's of course more, but for the average user the above should
provide safe enough computing for your friend.
