It's not a rumor, it's called Product Activation, and Microsoft is fairly up
front about it - the process doesn't happen without the user knowing about
it.
It doesn't happen the very next time you connect, but rather at the time the
software is installed. If the Activation is skipped, I believe there are
nag popups for the next 30 days.
This is a new "feature" of XP products - Windows XP, Office XP, etc.
