Outpost is supposedly more oriented towards the same market as Zone
Alarm. Nonetheless it appears to be a good product. Their site claims
it may have issues with Win2k-based ICS networks though.
I must admit I have little experience Outpost. I'm downloading it as
we speak because I want to try to produce an importable version of my
Spyware Blocklist for it, which so far is available only for Kerio and
Linux because they can import pre-written rulesets easily. I'm going
to check it out now.
Generally with home networks you need a hardware firewall or NAT
router in addition to a software firewall. The hardware firewall
provides protection against attacks against the networking protocols
themselves while the software firewall provides outbound protection
and additional inbound safety. The consumer routers on the market are
almost completely useless for outbound protection and have no external
IP filtering ability, so a software firewall is a must.
