According to the DSS (Defense Security Service), the only approved method of clearing/sanitizing magnetic disks is by degauss and destruction.

This is in effect since June 28, 2007.


If you're just wanting to use the "DoD wipe" for personal or private company use though, I'd recommend DBAN. It's free, and prior to the new DSS rules coming down, we used to use this in our shop.

My understanding of it, is that it writes all random data a number of times. I havent needed to use it in a while, but I think it even gives you options on how to wipe, I could be mistaken though since I havent used it in a while now.
