Sorry but i consider the discussion about random pattern and 1 and 0 more philosophical than practical.

Philosophical spoken, what is the difference between random pattern and 1 and 0, if the set for random patterns consists only in those 2 elements?

Practicaly spoken, i am not aware of data being recovered from hard disks wiped by overwriting once - do you know any cases?
Furthermore the size of hard disks increased significantly so it takes a considerable amount of time to overwrite more than once. Depending on the number of the dirves a degaussing or phyisical destruction might be much more cost-efiicient.

My understanding of it, is that it writes all random data a number of
times. I havent needed to use it in a while, but I think it even
gives you options on how to wipe, I could be mistaken though since I
havent used it in a while now.
