Re: Trend Vs Symantec

Thanks for the clarification Lane. I think there is definitely a misinterpretation.

This is what the link (http://apac.trendmicro.com/imperia/md/content/us/pdf/sb02_nss-frame_090319us.pdf) from that page says.

"During the full scan, Trend Micro OfficeScan requires significantly less memory than the other products in
the test. This means that users are able to continue to work and be productive while a scan is running. For
endpoints using McAfee, Symantec, or Sophos endpoint security, a full scan is virtually impossible, as the
software alone consumes about 1GB of memory during that scan operation."

The summary for the document is

"Out of four leading endpoint security solutions Trend Micro OfficeScan performs best in common everyday
operations. These operations were chosen from a variety of tests performed by NSS-labs to best illustrate
the real-life scenarios most likely to impact a user's productivity. With the least impact on the most common
everyday business actions, Trend Micro OfficeScan enables enterprises to support productivity, increase
user efficiency, and save on the cost of administration. See full report."

Full Report link : http://us.trendmicro.com/imperia/md/content/us/pdf/nss_labs_host_malware_performance_comparative_final.pdf (Registration required to view the report, or maybe to extract the link)

I didn't see that "full scan" thing anywhere in the full report and also what you can customize can never be a benchmark( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/ppfdocs/2008082509323748?Open&dtype=corp&src=&seg=&om=1&om_out=prod ) , In fact Symantec has beaten all at most of the tests. I think I will take this up with Trend anyway. If my boss gets to read that direct analysis, I am sure I would be questioned on the QA that I did and the document and feedback hunt efficiency before you recommend a vendor.

I think that any possible violation by Trend relates to the usage of
Symantec's trademark, but the page makes it very clear that Symantec doesn't
support Trend, and Trend isn't trying to use Symantec's name to attract
customers. The only other legal issue that I can see would be a suit for
misrepresentation ("false advertising"). If Symantec could prove that Trend
was deliberately lying to the public, they might have a case.

I understand why you might think that this is illegal, as most advertising
shies away from directly mentioning the competition, but I don't know of any
law that makes such caution necessary.

Hello List,

I was at the trend website looking for documents when the following link
caught my eye

http://apac.trendmicro.com/apac/time2switch/enterprise/index.html?wT.mc_id=0906_symantec_entlaning_apac

It's not about any of the competitors, It's about Symantec directly at Trend
site.

I would like to know if this is allowed and under the laws? Can you
openly(By naming them) criticize( Still think Symantec is the right choice?
Think again, How Many Threats is Symantec Missing?, End your Endpoint pain)
your competitor and their product?

This is under the enterprise tab which is even more surprising considering
the gravity.

Thanks in advance.
