Re: Port Monitoring Software

SolarWinds has two options, the most direct solution for the request
is ipMonitor. It's useful depending on how much data you want out of
it, and fairly inexpensive. However, while it's fairly strong in most
things, the SNMP engine lately seems to be suffering somewhat.
However, it's capable of checking ports and getting basic information
like just a header, or pulling the whole page and checking for a key
text string.

Orion is also a possibility, but it is pricey, and better suited for
things like bandwidth monitoring.

Subject: Port Monitoring Software

Dear All,

I have been assigned the task to recommend a freeware / low value
purchase software for our helpdesk to monitor tcp port status & server
availability. Can anyone recommend a simple & efficient product that can
run on Windows XP / 2003. Basic requirements would be -

1. To check the ping status
2. Check whether particular TCP ports are responding
3. Have a dashboard to give a quick representation
4. Must have an smtp engine to alert via emails

I am aware of Big Brother, just wanted to check if anyone could vouch
for a better software.

Thanks,
Tinu Koshy

PS: If you know of a Linux based software, please do suggest that too.
