Amongst other steps which i am sure others on the list will soon
enough provide, i would suggest you set up your firewall to only
accept SSH connections from a specified IP address. I also would move
ssh from 2222 to something else like 3463 (security through obscurity
i know...)
Disable root login via ssh. Oh and make sure you use strong passwords
on all your accounts.
