    And why is key length limited so much in PGP? For the speed? If I have a message that is very confidential, I don't mind waiting a few minutes before it's encrypted.

    You might be up to something there... It's just easier to monitor plain
    text messages, be it emails or SMS or whatever. And the NSA is doing it
    right now(Echelon system). I recommend "Body of Secrets" by James
    Bamford, which covers all of that aspects in detail, and it's also an
    interesting book on the biggest secret service on earth.
    With their immense computational power (who knows how many Gigaflops
    they currently got?) they could probably break and scan even today's
    GPG encrypted messages with ease, but not on such a large scale. That
    means if everyone used PGP, they'd be screwed :-)
