Principally speaking that would make sense. Speaking on track record, I
think that there have been a lot more vulnerabilities for MSN Messenger than
AIM or Yahoo. I would recommend using AIM, because you can also encrypt
conversations over the wire (albeit weak encryption) for free if you go to
www.aimencrypt.com.

I think that companies also develop private instant messaging software for
corporate networks -- like you can run your own messaging service that is
closed within the workplace.

I could be wrong but as Windows has Messenger services integrated within it
then wouldn't that make it more damaging if used as a source of attack?
Even disabling certain messenger services within windows has caused probs on
Xp machines in our office as it's all so tied up with other services.
