    If you want to gain a lot of knowledge w.r.t crypto I would recommend
    :

    - - Handbook of Applied Cryptography (This can be downloaded for free
    from the web)
    - - A Course in Number Theory and Cryptography (mathematical Background
    required)
    - - Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms (Schneier's )

    If you want an introductory text to Old cipher systems and an
    overview of new ones in
    simple words I would recommend you :
    - - A Very Short Introduction (By F. Piper) this is cheap as well

    Historical view of cryptography
    - - The Code Book
