Why not look into setting up Jabber. It's simple and functional. On a side
note, one can set up one of 'the big guys' effectively, it's just a matter
of creating some form of rules, whether they are proxy based, or firewall
(address) based without having to worry. One of the issues with doing so
however is, if the user's home machine was compromised, if that machine
has access via proxy or so, you're pretty much hit, if you've been say
    targeted.

If it's an internal thing solely though, I would look into using Jabber
for its functionality and ease of use for the end user and for the admins.
