    It doesn't sound cheesy. If you don't aim for it, you'll never get there.

    I'd suggest reading David Kahn's "The Codebreakers".

    Then get a degree (PhD preferred) in number theory.

    The <a http="www.cryptogram.org">American Cryptogram Association
    (ACA)</a> is always a good source of information.
