My IMHO is as follows:
The RPC is a protocol.
It is implemented by Microsoft in a service that runs in one of
svchost.exe processes.
It listens to ports 135, 139 et al.
It provides lots of functionality to both the remote clients and the
local machine.
RPC is not a Microsoft-only protocol, it is also used in the UNIX
world, mostly for NFS, the Network File system.
