    Stephen,

    1. Some type of wipe process...such as PGP Wipe, with different passes over
    the media depending on how secure you want to be.
    2. Degaussing - i.e magnetic wiping of the data from the device.
    3. Destruction - Should be clear cut what you would do.

    I'm sure there are others, but this should give you at least three options.

    the content contains medical records etc, what is industry standard practice
