The DMZ is where you should place all your services. Not only is it protected from the public network (Internet), it is also protected from the private network (LAN); or more appropriately, your LAN is protected from the DMZ. If your mailserver is compromised then there is less chance of the attacker being able to access the rest of the network.
I hope this helps.

Subject: Mail server
Hi There
Can somebody please shed some light.
Is it safer to place your mailserver in the DMZ or in your LAN (with NAT
configured)?
Thank you
Imraan
