Here are my 2 cents on the subject...
I have experience with the PIX and the SonicWall SOHO series firewalls. The
PIX is an all around great choice for firewalling. The power of the Cisco
IOS is very hard to beat in any competitive device. For the price you are
willing to spend, you can purchase a very powerful PIX as well, and have
many features afforded to you to protect your network and allow for the
continued flow of mail to and fro. On top of that, if you have other Cisco
equipment on the wire, you stand to gain a great amount if you implement any
of Cisco's software (such as Cisco Secure, Cisco Works) because your
equipment is all on the same page.
With respect to the SonicWall, I have to say I am very impressed with what
they have to offer. Speaking in terms of the SOHO line, you can have a VPN,
User Authentication, AntiVirus, Content Filtering and a Firewall solution
all in one box. In my opinion, it is a real turnkey solution.
I have both devices on my various networks and if you ask me which is best?
I ask you what are you more comfortable with? Both are great products and
do a great job for me. I've had my SonicWall up for over a year with no
issues, and the PIX is a fairly recent install but seems very solid.
FYI, a hardware firewall will not be a catch all, end of security problem
solution. You need to make sure your network beyond the firewall is well
secured with unneeded or unnecessary services off of your wire at the local
servers and workstations. I've seen DOS, Directory Transversal and other
abnormal and unwanted behavior make it across firewalls of all kinds.
Please do not let hardware be the only measure of security you implement.
Good luck with your selection!
Bejon
