It wasn't meant to be that way. I have seen the postfix code, not the
qmail code.

Well, Postfix gives me that with much less trouble.

I was trying for exactly that, and I have no problems with hairy
configuration files. Though I personally prefer a simpler
configuration, its much harder to screw things up that way.
This isn't meant to be flame-bait, just my opinion. Feel free to
