    The best knowledge comes from practical experience.
    Install a protocol analyzer (Ethereal
    <http://www.ethereal.com/> is free) and look at real
    world data.  If you don't have access to a business
    network to examine, use your home network, or you can
    get sample packet captures
    <http://www.ethereal.com/sample/> to start with.

    That being said, in my opinion, the second best
    knowledge comes from O'Reilly books. Take a look at:
    Internet Core Protocols: The Definitive Guide
    <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/coreprot/>
    TCP/IP Network Administration, 3rd Edition
    <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/tcp3/>
    Building Internet Firewalls, 2nd Edition
    <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/fire2/>

    You might want to think about a Safari
    <http://safari.oreilly.com/> membership to save some
    money on the cost of the books.

    Many community colleges offer low cost classes in
    networking and computer security, usually taught by
    people with experience in the industry. Many colleges
    also offer Cisco Network Academy classes
    <http://cisco.netacad.net> as well.

    Hope this helps, best of luck to you.

    not a professional in any sense of the word, I just
    toy with
    technology out of love. I have yet to find a good
    tutorial or
    instruction manual on how to use TCP/IP or many of the
    other
    technologies used in security and the internet. While
    I'm sure they
    exist, I simply haven't stumbled across them yet. It
    took me several
    tries with Google to find an explanation of SMTP; even
    then it wasn't
    obvious from the search results. Perhaps if somebody
    would make a
    website or (inexpensive) book dedicated to topics such
    as these, more
    geeks/professionals would have a knowledge of it.

    And that concludes my outsider's view. :)
