    eTrust's InoculateIT Anti-virus scanner (4.x, 6.x, maybe 7) use Windows
Messenger to alert the user that a virus was detected. This will not stop
the program from running, but there is no other explicit notification of the
virus unless you look at scan details, the system event log, or the alert
server logs (if you utilize that).

Many print notifications use Messenger to deliver failed/successful print
    messages.

I have shut down Messenger on a machine or two, and had no ill effects.
These would be normal business workstation / web services developer
    machines.
