    It was an OBP setting, but not the output-device and input-device the
    majority of people suggested. Even if these are set to screen and keyboard,
    respectively, the server will still default to ttya for input and/or output
    if they are not detected. The E450 server will boot without a monitor and
    keyboard with all the default OBP and kbd settings. My problem was that the
    value OBP ttya-ignore-cd had been changed from true (default) to false.
    Once this was reset to true the sever boots fine with neither a monitor nor
    keyboard connected even with output-device=monitor and
    input-device=keyboard. Also, I am able to connect and disconnect from the
    console at any point using a proper terminal emulator and cable connected to
    ttya. I use the serial port on my laptop, a null modem cable, and
    SecureCRT.
