Many thanks to all those who pointed me at lofiadm (was there all the
time!)

dd if=raw-dev | ./nc host port

with diagnostic host
nc -l -p port > root.dd

followed by
lofiadm -a /disk/root.dd

and
mount -o ro /dev/lofi/1 /mnt/diagnostic

all works brilliantly.
