No, PAM did not exist as a public interface until Solaris 2.6

Correct everything was hard coded in 2.5.1.

No you can't. I'd strongly suggest upgrading to something more recent that
2.5.1.
I don't believe there is anything in OpenSSL that uses PAM, since OpenSSL
is about crypto algorithms and the SSL protocol. I could be wrong though,
if so please point me to the bit in OpenSSL that uses PAM so I can verifiy
that it does so correctly.
