I would recommend airdefense personal, a wireless intrusion detection system for laptops. She can get a free copy at http://www.airdefense.net/products/adpersonal/ This is the "lite" version that doesn't have central managemnt of signatures, etc. However, it is a nice product that will detect if someone is trying to hijack a session, spoof an AP, etc.
Tell her to try that coupled with a good personal firewall and she should be set.

I have a friend who is interested in better securing her laptop while
she's out surfing the net at coffeehouses and what not. I'm thinking of
telling her to just get herself a REALLY good firewall program (I use
zonealarm pro myself), but I was wondering if anyone here had any other
ideals or thoughts that I could pass onto her other than that.
