You're got that one right. First, a hotfix appears on the TechNet/Security
bulletin site, next it appears in the download center, finally it may or not
    appear in WindowsUpdate.

My best advice is subscribe to MS alert service - that'll ensure you receive
an email when any critical updates are released. Second, go to
http://www.kbalertz.com and subscribe to their newsletter (you'll have to
register, but it's free; good privacy policy and you get spam).

The kbalertz site also has a terrific search engine for KB searches, and the
newsletter subscription let's you select email alerts whenever a new KB
article appears on any of the products or hardware you select. It's a great
    site - very useful.

    Hope this helps,

    M
