    John,

I was looking into the same thing a week or so ago in
a thread titled "investigating misuse of the
internet". I received quite a lot of useful info both
on and off the list (thanks to all who replied!), and
here are some tools suggested to me that are well
    worth looking at:-

    1. Freebie index.dat viewer: PASCO by Keith Jones

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=78332

    2. For both history and cache try Index (History)
    Reader by Wolfgang Baudisch

    http://www.wbaudisch.de/HistoryReader.htm

    Enjoy!

    Andy.
