We participated the beta, it's called SUS-SA although it's not widely publicized or well known to even some of the MS reps based on feedback I have seen elsewhere in discussions of the product.
If you don't have Software Assurance for all the products it's not an option. Since we don't have SA at this time on the desktop OS, we are taking another look at SMS2003 and other alternatives.
Basically it has the same features and limitations others have discussed in this thread, just widens the product scope that SUS applies to.

Brad,
The main limitation of SUS (by way of comparison to the other products you
mentioned) is that it doesn't support office or server application updates.
- From what I understand (and am in the process of investigating myself),
there is a version of SUS that is available as part of an MS Software
Assurance license that gives you additional features over and above the
base version (but still far below what you can accomplish with the SMS SUS
component). You might want to check into it.
