Michael,
I have the same configuration on my workstation and i have not had the
problem that you described.
after looking at my system event log i do not have what your system log
showed ("Windows XP Hotfix Q326886 was installed."
i have no entry at all for this patch but i do have "Windows 2000 Hotfix
(Pre-SP4) [See Q326886 for more information] in my Add/Remove Programs.
I have installed this patch to three of my workstations that do not behave
like yours.
