The only issue I have encountered with automatic updates from
Microsoft not functioning is when there is ad cleaning applications
(such as AdSubtract) installed and enabled. Not only will automatic
updates from Microsoft not work, but scheduled live updates for
antivirus definitions will not operate. The ad cleaning software must
be disabled before the update will be allowed to install.
Just my $0.02.

Greetings:
I am curious to see how others are faring with the Automatic Update
feature
in XP Pro. I have several XP Pro boxes on my test network that have
Automatic Updates enabled with the "Download the updates
automatically and
notify me when they are ready to be installed" option selected.
These
boxes are logged in as Admin, and have been sitting around for
months. There is no policy that restricts them from accessing the
updates,
and manual updates work just fine. The problem is that I have never
been
notified that an update was available. I purposefully left the boxes
alone
for the last 2 months (without using Windows Update) and upon
manually
updating, had 7-10 critical updates that needed installing.
The only common feature is that they are all sitting behind an ISA
firewall. All 3 types of client configs are represented: SNAT,
Firewall
Client, and Web Proxy Client. None have ever automatically
downloaded the
updates and notified me that they were ready to be installed. I have
not
found any documentation on exactly how the Automatic Update feature
connects/checks/downloads the updates.
I have read through all the tech articles and help that I can find,
but
don't see anything.
How are the rest of you doing with it?
