You probably need to clarify requirements a bit.
When you say "a la Outlook" do you require IMAP & ability to use LDAP for
addressing (as is often the case when used with an exchange server), do you
need the calendar style functionality? or are you after a simple client?
Is it a stand alone mail client you want or a mail client that is integrated
into something else (e.g. a browser or "office" package?).
If we assume you want IMAP & LDAP then something like the Mozilla browser
does the job - and you get to check the sources if you're worried - I often
use this on Linux (its available on MS too) to access mail by IMAP & use
LDAP for address list access.
As for more secure ... just about any mail client as the majority of email
based viruses & exploits on MS are aimed at Outlook clients.
