I have tried this and other options similar to what your describing in the
past. I had a procedure working for the automated install of SP5 on all
servers using WinInstall from Seagate software. This worked until the SP6a
release where Microsoft fails to explain that you will have a really
difficult time scripting an automated install due to the fact that certain
files are not replaced until reboot. WinInstall and older versions of
Installshield have had a lot of difficulty with these issues. Microsoft
wound up simply stating that WinInstall was not supported for Service Pack
deployments and to use tools such as SMS or look at using their unattended
install script. The short of the story is that after many weeks of work it
is easier to use the supported tolls such as Qchain or SMS with an
unattended script for the SP deployment.

Could this be done using a tool such as InstallShield Express 3.5?
It allows you to take EXEs and use them at various points during the
install process. I know it uses MSI to do the actual installing.
The type of setup you are describing would take maybe 15 minutes to build
... what I'm not sure about is whether you can just get a standalone MSI
out of InstallShield Express because I use it to build self installing EXE
files for our software.
They do a 30 day trial on their web site if it helps ....
