I've researched this quite a bit as well and found that for our
production needs, OpenAFS was the only replacement that seemed ready
form 'prime time'. We're going to be investigating this option in our
test lab.
We've also been investigating using a clustering filesystem (GFS, or the
like) over an iSCSI SAN. This gives us the block level devices that
we'd like with the relative low cost of network gear.
