    RPM has built in support for this sort of thing,
    so it SHOULD work, but I've never know it to be
    an advertised way of doing things so you never know.

    ..This is from the man page of rpm:

            --root <dir>
                    Use the system rooted at <dir> for all
                    operations. Note that this means the database
                    will be read or modified under <dir> and any
                    pre or post scripts are run after a chroot()
                    to <dir>.
