Linux FTP/Firewall combo suggestion requested

A cohort & I are looking into having a FTP server that sits on the DMZ,
CD-Rom based image for quick booting but still be able to be secure (?)
enough to require little maintenance beyond updating patches to the overall
CD boot image.

Can anyone on the list give recommendations on what is out there for Linux?
