Hmm. Haven't used yp/nis, but I found the combination of OpenLDAP and PAM
fairly quick to install and configure, and its very secure
if you use TLS (though that's an extra setup step, with the cert and all).
A ten-minute perl script is enough to convert your
existing /etc/passwd and /etc/group to an LDAP-readable LDIF file format.
If you don't want to DIY, padl.com has some migration tools that look
handy, though I haven't used them myself.
