    ('binary' encoding is not supported, stored as-is) Black Ice and Desktop Protector can provide alerts for several types of events. I would recommend looking at the product details so you can make the appropriate recommendation based on the specifics. I have used it on XP, and 2000 in a large production environment. I've also used data mining tools and analysis such as ISS and ArcSight.
