what is BSD-style authentication in auth-bsdauth

    I see references to BSD-style authentication in auth-bsdauth.c - the
    format seems to be username:style

    My question is: what is this used for?
    I can't find any reference to it in the O'Reilly book or on the web.

    Can anyone help?
