Hello folks,
Everyone has suggested that reverse dns lookup is the problem. However, even
with my hostname in the /etc/hosts for BOTH systems, I still have the login
delay problem. Any other suggestions?

DNS problem. The server is trying to do a reverse lookup on you.
Quick test is to put your ip into the servers /etc/hosts and see if the
delay goes away.
