    I do this also through ssh and tunnel more than once.
    The key is to use ssh -X

    E.g

    localhost: ssh -X -l <user> machinea

    machinea: ssh -X -l <user> machineb

    machineb: /usr/openwin/xclock &

    should then work providing u got x forwarding set in
    /usr/local/etc/sshd_config, and that you have x server on your localhost
