    Hello Jim,

I'd suspect that the listings does not properly look it up, or that it
    cannot.

The 'can not' can be easily checked: Can the effective user that one
is logged in as get the appropriate information? This would require
/etc/passwd and /etc/groups (?) to be readable to them.

The 'does not' is that the sftp server may be telling it not to look it
up. If you 'switch' ls to log the parameters it's called with, it
might help you find if this is the case.
(Switch: Move it to another name, make a new ls that logs its
parameters to a file and calls ls by it's new name)
