If I recall correctly, when I generated a key with puttygen and put the
pub key on my Linux box, I had to use
$ ssh-keygen -if putty.pub
to convert it. Then cat the resulting file onto the end of your
authorized_keys file. It's been a while, but I think that's how I did
it.
