    I experienced a similar problem some time ago. In my case, it was
    caused by the ssh server not being configured for handling the
    particular format in which passwords were stored in my system (MD5).
    You might want to reinstall openssh from source, specifying
    "--with-md5-passwords" to the 'configure' script.
