I forget who said it, but it's true: "Security is a process not a
product". I think education is the most important thing. Read some
books, learn the distro you choose, and read web sites like
securityfocus.com and get on mailing lists. Stay informed. Of course the
"secure by default" distros are nice, since you don't have to start from
a non-secure place. ALso, not to start a flame war of any kinds, but
there is also OpenBSD, another 'open" OS that is fairly secure "out of
the box".
