PC Tools AntiVirus Insecure Default Directory Permissions
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY
"With <http://www.pctools.com/anti-virus/> PC Tools AntiVirus you are
protected against the most nefarious cyber-threats attempting to gain
access to your PC and personal information." Secunia Research has
discovered a security issue in PC Tools AntiVirus, which can be exploited
by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges.
DETAILS
Vulnerable Systems:
* PC Tools AntiVirus version 2.1.0.51
The problem is caused due to the application setting insecure default
permissions (grants "Everyone" group "Full Control") on the "PC Tools
AntiVirus" directory and all child objects. This can be exploited to
remove, manipulate, and replace any of the application's files.
Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary commands with SYSTEM
privileges.
Solution:
Grant only trusted users access to affected systems. Set proper
permissions on the directory and all child objects (this may impact the
functionality).
Time Table:
19/07/2006 - Vendor notified.
02/08/2006 - Vendor notified again.
03/08/2006 - Public disclosure.
