Mathopd Insecure Dump File Creation
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY
" <http://www.mathopd.org/> Mathopd is a very small, yet very fast HTTP
server for UN*X systems. Mathopd supports useful features of HTTP/1.1,
such as persistent connections, partial responses and pipelining. It does
not support things like content negotiation. The latest version of the
software (1.5) also supports CGI/1.1".
Recently discovered vulnerability in Mathopd, can be exploited by
malicious local users to corrupt the contents of arbitrary files on a
vulnerable system.
DETAILS
Vulnerable Systems:
* Mathopd version 1.5p4
* Mathopd version 1.6b5
Immune Systems:
* Mathopd version 1.5p5
* Mathopd version 1.6b6 Beta
The vulnerability is caused due to the "internal_dump()" function creating
dump files insecurely when a SIGWINCH signal is caught. This can be
exploited via symlink attacks to append dump data to arbitrary files on
the system with the privileges of the user running Mathopd.
Successful exploitation requires that Mathopd is running with the "-n"
command line option, and the user running Mathopd resizes the terminal
window.
